"Let A Big Black Lady Stop The Show!"
That's a song Capathia Jenkins (above) sang in Broadway's Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me a few years ago, spoofing the way so many musicals rely on a plus-sized African American powerhouse to save the evening with a big belty number.
Capathia is one of the highlights of Newsies, playing Medda Larkin, the chanteuse who helps the (very) striking boys, even serving up a lyric that's the Disney show's single racy reference.
And naturally she stopped the show as she sang it.
And she's at it again.

(But she also plays a nun. Lordy, there's a lot of religion on Broadway's heathen stages these days!)
And that's not all the big, black, female wailing this season.
In Ghost The Musical, DaVine Joy Randolph plays Oda Mae Brown, the Whoopi Goldberg fake psychic character whose mission is to inject life into the afterlife.
And over at Leap of Faith--yep, more religiosity--we go from Oda Mae to Ida Mae because I hear there happens to be a gospelicious character named Ida Mae Sturdevant, played byKecia Lewis-Evans.
Three of anything makes for a trend.
Four would make it amazing, so I'm publicly urging the ladies over at Porgy and Bess to start packing on more poundage.

"Newsies" To Be On "Submissions Only"
This Friday, April 27, "Submissions Only" will air its episode 2 season finale, featuring previously announced guest star Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, On The Town), right here on BroadwayWorld. While epsiode scoop is expected tomorrow, today, BroadwayWorld is excited to reveal that the boys of Newsies will also appear in the episode doing what they do best - dancing and singing. "Submissions Only" is a grassroots web sitcom that shows viewers what really goes on off stage. Following the friendship of two theater professionals, an actress (Kate Wetherhead as Penny Reilly) and a casting director (Colin Hanlon as Tim Trull), as they try to build careers in the notoriously tricky and often absurd world of Broadway theatrics, “Submissions Only” proves there’s a whole lot of comedy in all the drama.
The series was created by New York actors Kate Wetherhead and Andrew Keenan-Bolger in August 2010. Now in their second season, Wetherhead serves as co-director and head writer. Keenan-Bolger serves as co-director and editor.
The main cast of Season One included Colin Hanlon, Kate Wetherhead, Stephen Bienskie, Lindsay Nicole Chambers, Max von Essen, Santino Fontana, Asmeret Ghebremichael and Anne L. Nathan.
The series has featured a glittering array of special guest stars, including Kristin Chenoweth, Chita Rivera, Kristen Johnston, Michael Urie, Cady Huffman, Michael Rupert, Danny Burstein,
